In February, about to compete in the World Championship, after carrying out an examination, it was found that Toon Aerts consumed the substance Letrozole Metabolite, which is present in drugs against breast cancer. However, even claiming to be innocent, the athlete was suspended for two years from participating in any dispute.

In an interview with the press, the athlete commented that he had received the subpoena and that he is still in shock with the information: “This means that I can start a cyclocross race again on February 16, 2024, at the latest. But I want to keep proving my innocence. This is a very severe punishment for someone who can say with a clear conscience that he is not a doping sinner.”

The team said they would have some suspicion of the supplements the athlete was taking at the time, “We suspect the source of contamination, but this has not yet been confirmed. We will continue to review supplements and any potential issues Toon may have experienced during this time. Hopefully we’ll find a track we can keep working on.”
