Hengel had kayaked about 300 meters from shore and placed the bait in the water. Then he kayaked back in and waited for a bite. To his surprise, a huge female shark literally took the bait. Two bathers helped him pull the shark to shore.

Within a minute, he had removed the animal’s hook, took a few pictures, and dragged the shark back safely into the water. He declared his catch to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. It will be some time before he knows if he broke the unofficial catch and release record.
