“I’m in the air right now, I have no words for this moment. It’s unbelievable. I’m very proud because we had a great tournament. We suffered, but we also enjoyed it and we deserved it” said Aitana Bonmati, a midfield player for Spain, when interviewed by the BBC.

Until 2014, the Royal Spanish Federation did not direct the necessary attention and budgets to the improvement of the female category in football. In 2015, Spain competed in the Women’s World Cup, however, it failed to win and, due to the low stimulus and benefit in the sport, 23 players signed a petition requesting changes in the sector.

In the following years, the main football clubs began to invest financially and in infrastructure to promote new talent for the women’s category. From 2018, the teams had a significant increase in female players, who, little by little, began to win several championships.

However, during the celebrations of the last match and the delivery of medals, the president of Spanish Football, Luis Rubiales, kissed Jenni Hermoso, in which he did not expect the attitude. In statements, the player revealed that she did not like the situation and that, at the moment, she had no reaction to stop him. The former defender’s stance generated protests and negative demonstrations about her behavior.
