Lotto-Dstny cyclist does not survive after suffering an accident while training

The athlete was close to reaching a new stage in his career

Last Wednesday (24), through social networks and official websites, Lotto-Dsty declared that Tijl De Decker suffered an accident when he collided with a car during training. After the occasion, the cyclist was rushed to the hospital for being seriously injured, undergoing surgeries, however, the athlete could not resist the injuries and died on Friday (25).

Lotto-Dstny paid tribute to the cyclist during the statement on his loss: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tijl De Decker, following a training accident last Wednesday. We wish strength to the family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time”.

When the athlete was taken to the hospital, for having hit his head very hard, he had to undergo different surgeries and soon after, he was transferred to a second health unit, Antwerp University Hospital, where he ended up settling in the ICU in a coma.

Stéphanie Heulot, CEO of Lotto-Dstny, stated that Tijl De Decker was an exemplary professional demonstrating great progress during the period of training and matches he faced. “We will always remember him as a talented young rider and a warm and friendly person off the bike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” he said.

 According to the website Het Nieuwsblad, the local police in Belgium are investigating the incident with the cyclist. Guard spokeswoman Magalie Derboven reported that the accident occurred on a public road and that the Public Prosecutor’s Office is analyzing the circumstances of the case.
