This next weekend (10/08), Max Verstappen could secure the 2023 Formula 1 drivers’ title, his third, at the Qatar Grand Prix.

With his 13th victory at the Suzuka Grand Prix, he now has a 177-point lead over his teammate Sergio Perez, his only mathematical opponent, with 180 points still to be scored in the remaining six Grands Prix and three sprints.

Verstappen needs just three more points in total between now and November 26 in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. His first chance to secure the title comes on Saturday (7). He can become the first driver to clinch a title in a Sprint race if finishes sixth or higher in the short-form format Saturday, regardless of where Perez finishes.

In any case, if Perez doesn’t finish in the top three in the Sprint, the Dutch driver is champion anyway. Even if Verstappen failed to finish the Sprint and Perez beat him, he still only needs to score three points in Sunday’s race to secure the title, regardless of Perez’s result.
