In July 2021, the Real Madrid midfielder announced that Euro 2020 had been his last competition wearing the Germany shirt. The idea was to dedicate himself to the Spanish club and his family.

Just as he announced his retirement, Kroos used an Instagram post to confirm his return to the German national team.

The 34-year-old midfielder said he spoke with Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, and will return to represent the country for this year’s European Championship.

“Guys, short and thick: I will play for Germany again from March. Why? Because I was invited by the national coach, I’m ready for it and I’m sure that much more is possible with this team in the European Championship than most people believe!”, he published.

It’s worth remembering that the German team has been going through a period of disappointment recently.

Still with Kroos, they fell in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup and were eliminated by England in Euro 2020. Without the Real Madrid midfielder, Germany repeated the World Cup in Russia and did not advance to the knockout stage in the Qatar Cup in 2022.

Kroos has played 106 games for Germany in his career, with a world title at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Therefore, based in Germany, this year’s edition of the Eurocup takes place between June 14th and July 14th. The grand final of the European competition will be held in Berlin, in the German capital.
