Last week, when interviewed by the German newspaper Bild, Jan Ullrich commented that he would like to return to professional cycling and that he was open to possibilities and proposals. “Obviously I wouldn’t be a sporting director for the team, but if anyone needs me I’m open to anything,” he said.

The former athlete retired in 2006 after several controversies in his career, such as having committed doping, alcohol problems and drug abuse. In interviews, Jan Ullrich admits that he is better now, “I’m back in real life. I always thought I didn’t need help, but now I’m accepting it. I was able to build a stable environment around myself again”

Jan Ullrich was responsible for being the first man and so far, the only German cyclist from his country, to win the Tour de France in 1997 and to win an Olympic gold medal in 2000, accelerating and boosting cycling in Germany.
