Upon winning the match, the athlete celebrated by hitting his helmet and then, in an interview after the end, he explained the meaning: “I made that sign to show everyone that mentally I am unbreakable. First place in stage 18 marks a milestone in the career of Remco Evenepoel, who with his third victory marks the 50th number of victories throughout his history in professional sport. When congratulated by his colleagues, the cyclist joked that he would celebrate with a big cake at dinner that night.

“Seriously, this means a lot. I’m in my fifth season as a professional and I’ve already won a lot of races at the highest levels, so I think I can only be proud. Every year I’m getting a little stronger and a little more mature and this is the result of that”, said the athlete.

Remco Evenepoel ended the interview by explaining his expectations for the final stages of the Vuelta a Espana: “If I hadn’t won a stage here it would be a great goal, but now I think I’ll be calmer. I had two very intense stages here, in the north of Spain, so the most important thing is to recover. After today there is no more pressure and I want to make the most of these last three days”.
