Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani undergoes an elbow surgery

On Tuesday morning (19), Shohei Ohtani had surgery to repair damage to his right elbow. The expectation, according to doctors, is that the Los Angeles Angels star will return to hitting at the beginning of next season, but that he will only pitch in 2025.

The Japanese suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament at the end of last month but continued to hit until an oblique injury ended his season early this week.

In a statement released by the Angels, doctor Neal ElAttrache (who performed the surgery) gave some details about the process. “The ultimate plan, after deliberation with Shohei, was to repair the problem in question and reinforce the healthy ligament, while also adding viable tissue for the longevity of the elbow. I expect a full recovery, and he will be ready to hit without any restrictions on Opening Day 2024 and do both [hit and pitch] in 2025.”

On his social network, the player assured fans that everything was fine and thanked them for their support. “I had an elbow procedure this morning and everything went very well. Thank you so much for everyone’s prayers and kind words. It was a shame not to be able to finish the year on the field, but I will be rooting for the boys until the end. I will do my best to return to the field stronger than ever.”

The Japanese is the main favorite to win his second Major League Baseball MVP award
this season, but he couldn’t get the Angels to the playoffs.

For the season, Ohtani had 44 home runs and 95 runs batted in, as well as a 3.14 ERA and 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings as a pitcher.
