The target of high expectations in this clay court season in Europe, Carlos Alcaraz disappointed fans this Tuesday (9) by announcing that he will not compete in the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, in Monaco. The Spanish tennis player revealed a muscle injury in his right forearm.

“I had been training in Monte Carlo and tried to recover until the last minute from an injury to the pronator muscle in my right arm, but it wasn’t possible and I’m not in a position to play,” Alcaraz said on the social network X (formerly Twitter). “I was looking forward to playing. See you (fans) next year.”
As a result, the 20-year-old Spaniard, who did not reveal an estimated return date, was scheduled to face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round.

With his withdrawal, Italian Lorenzo Sonego entered the bracket as a “lucky loser” and will debut directly in the second round, being Aliassime’s opponent.
Current Wimbledon champion, Alcaraz is one of the experts’ bets for the clay season, which will culminate in Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the season. Last year, he reached the semifinals, but was eliminated by Serbian Novak Djokovic, current number 1 in the world.
Coming off a great season, in which he lifted six trophies, Alcaraz has not yet achieved success in 2024. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and, subsequently, suffered his first injury of the season, right on his debut at the Rio Open. The Spaniard, number three in the world, has only shone so far at the Indian Wells Masters, where he was champion, in the United States, last month.
