Kobe Bryant’s first NBA title ring went up for auction over the weekend. The jewelry, which had been a gift from the star to his father Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, was sold for US$927,000. The value is a record for an American Basketball League championship ring.

Always at the head of the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant won the first of his five NBA titles in the 1999/2000 season.
He gave the championship ring as a gift to his father Joe, which in 2013 was sold to the Goldin collectibles market.

While the weekend’s sale was a record for an NBA championship ring, it’s not the most expensive sports jewelry in history. The record is held by Babe Ruth’s 1927 World Series baseball championship ring, which sold for $2.09 million.
Kobe Bryant was the star of the Los Angeles Lakers between 1996 and 2016, winning five NBA titles and one season MVP (2008) and two Finals MVPs (2009 and 2010).
He went to the All-Star Game 18 times and was named MVP of the All-Star Game on four occasions. He passed away at the age of 41 in January 2020 in a tragic helicopter accident.
