Megan Rapinoe says goodbye to the US national team

This Sunday (24), Megan Rapinoe said goodbye to the United States women’s national team. She had already announced her retirement in June, prior to the 2023 World Cup.

In a 2-0 win over South Africa, she was honored before, during and after the match. During the game, she even was involved in the second goal, scored by Emily Sonnett, after a corner kick.

She received an ovation when withdrawn after 54 minutes. After the match, she gave a speech, and was embraced by the team. “It has been really wonderful, to hear all the nice things, to have a closure moment, to play in front of a big crowd again. I’ll miss it forever. I don’t think I’ll ever be at a moment where it will feel perfect but this is pretty close.” 

“I’m not going to go away forever. Don’t worry. I’m one of you guys now.” added Rapinoe. She is going to retire when the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season ends, on October 15, when OL Reign play their final game. 

For the USA Rapinoe have won 203 caps, scored 63 goals and won the World Cup in 2015 and 2019. She also won the 2019 Ballon d’Or.
