US President Joe Biden said he does not support the independence of Taiwan after the country’s voters backed the ruling party at the ballot box this week. And this declaration has turned eyes from both Republicans and Democrats in USA that sympathizes with Taiwan’s right to declare its territories independent and against authoritarian rule and martial law from China.

In an opposite direction from USA current administration, China was angered in 2016 when then-President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, the first such conversation between U.S.
Back on January 9th, 2021, days before Trump’s administrations ended, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo abruptly lifted U.S. government rules prohibiting interactions between American and Taiwanese diplomats, a move that amounted to a symbolic but significant upgrade in the U.S. relationship with the democratic island, which China claims as its territory.
In the years since, beside sending senior officials to Taiwan, the Trump administration has increased the frequency of U.S. Navy ships sailing through the Taiwan Strait, and sold arms to Taiwan with greater regularity — and less concern about China’s objections — than past administrations.
Critics say the moves, timed shortly before the handover, were designed to nettle Beijing one last time and force the Biden administration to make difficult, and potentially politically costly, decisions. They also came as Pompeo in recent days designated Cuba and the Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen as sponsors of terrorism.

“If the new administration explicitly embraces the change, they get volatility and a confrontational relationship with China, which is what the Trump team and Pompeo wanted,” said Evan Medeiros, a professor at Georgetown University and former senior director for Asia on President Barack Obama’s National Security Council. “If they reject it, they get a political problem and a problem with Taiwan. The whole issue of contacts will become a new metric in the U.S.-China-Taiwan relationship.”
And that is precisely what just happened this January (16) of 2024. Where critics from all parts are demanding Biden administration to revise it’s decision and support the independence of Taiwan after the country’s voters backed the ruling party at the ballot box.
