The trophy was secured with a goal from Van Dijk at the end of extra time, after a goalless draw in regular time.

Therefore, this is Liverpool’s 10th victory in the English League Cup, the second most important cup in local football.

The club thus extends its dominance as the greatest champion in the history of the tournament, created in the 1960s.

The trophy is worth a place in the Conference League – to be inherited by the best placed in the Premier League outside the classification zone for other European tournaments.

A reference in the squad for years, Van Dijk once again played the role of hero for Liverpool this Sunday. And he tasted it twice: the first time it wasn’t worth it, but the second time it made history.

After having a headed goal disallowed in the second half, due to Endo’s irregular position, the Dutchman only had a chance again in the final minutes of extra time – and he didn’t waste it. Van Dijk anticipated a corner kick and headed in with precision to secure his eighth title in a Liverpool shirt.
