German coach Nagelsmann reveals that his father was a spy who killed himself

The coach of the Germany national team, Julian Nagelsmann, gave an exclusive interview to the magazine “Der Spiegel”, which was published this Friday. The coach revealed that his father was a spy for the country’s secret service and that he killed himself 16 years ago.

++ Guardiola reveals his desire to coach the national team: “I would like to play in a World Cup”

“I’m not allowed to say much more than that, and I don’t know exactly what he did. But he wasn’t in management. He told me when I was 15 or 16. He used to mention it on our training trips , from Landsberg to Munich. He couldn’t talk about his work. That was why he often said it was too much for him. He didn’t share the concerns of his work. It was too much to deal with.”

Nagelsmann found out about the suicide of his father, named Erwin, while he was on a coaching preparation course. During his youth, he believed Erwin was a soldier — something even his grandfather believed. Julian had difficulty dealing with his father’s death.

“It was difficult. My father didn’t leave a note, there was no explanation. But the way he took his own life, it was clear that the decision was absolutely clear to him. It’s shit for the family, but it helped me understand that he really wanted to die, it wasn’t a cry for help or a sign. I have to respect that decision,” he said.

Julian Nagelsmann took on the challenge of being the coach of the Germany national team, at the age of 36, in September last year. He has led the national team in four friendlies so far. They beat the United States 3-1 and drew 2-2 with Mexico, but then lost to Turkey 3-2 and Austria 2-0.

The host team for the next European Championship, Germany, debuts on June 14th, against Scotland, at the Allianz Arena, in Munich. The second game will be on the 19th, against Hungary, and the third in the group stage will be on the 23rd, against Switzerland.
