The injury occurred when she was playing for Scotland, in a 1-1 draw with Belgium at Hampden. Weir ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament, and it has been said that she will undergo surgery in the next few days.

This is the same injury that Manchester United midfielder and Scotland’s Emma Watson suffered in a training session last week. Watson posted an Instagram story to talk about the injury, and wrote that she was devastated but “fully focused” on rehab. She also thanked the fans for their support.

Now both Weir and Watson will miss the rest of Scotland’s Nations League campaign, which faces a double-header against the Netherlands in October, and also matches against Belgium and England in December.

Weir left Manchester City to join Real Madrid on a free contract in July 2022. She won her first cap in 2013, and also was in the Great Britain team for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
