In an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, the former president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, considered the choice of the central country for the Cup a big mistake and also emphasized that the venue is too small for the proportion that the competition requires. In addition, he reinforced that the United States was the best option at the time of the decision.

Joseph also reported that at the time, in 2010, the choice was already pre-defined and that it would be a peace gesture for the United States to host the competition after Russia. However, in finalizing the selection, Qatar won by 14 to 8 votes against the American country.

Qatar’s definition also upset former Germany player and Euro 2024 director Philipp Lahm, who repudiated the severe way in which the laws are applied “homosexuals are still criminalised, women do not have the same rights as men, the freedom of the press and freedom of expression are restricted”.
