No rest: NBA Council increases fine for teams that allow stars to pause

Last Monday (11), according to journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, from ESPN, the NBA Competition Committee together with the league’s Board of Governors will hold a vote to increase the value of the fine on matches broadcast by television where sports stars are not playing. The action will be voted on Wednesday (13).

If approved, the measure will have higher fines for each violation, the first equivalent to US$100,000 dollars, the second to US$250,000 dollars and for each subsequent infraction committed, it would be around US$1 million dollars. However, teams will only be punished for resting the NBA’s biggest stars in competitions such as All-Star or All-Pro.

Previously, in 2020, the NBA Council had taken the same action against the teams with a fine equivalent to US$100,000, prohibiting the rest of healthy players in matches that are broadcast on national television. However, the teams managed to maneuver the action and continued to act in the same way, justifying the athletes’ pause due to age, injury, among others.

The subject returned to the agenda due to negotiations on the new media rights agreement being negotiated by Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, and with this, he intends to increase the presence and participation of players who have worldwide recognition in professional basketball.

A report states which options are viable to the extent such as: “Teams must manage their rosters to ensure that no more than one star player is unavailable for the same game”, “Teams must ensure that star players are available for national television and for in-season tournaments”, “Teams must ensure that healthy players who rest for the game are present and visible to fans.”
