Mathieu van der Poel withdraws from planned races and announces pause in competitions

Last Tuesday (26), through social media and official websites, Mathieu van der Poel withdrew from the races that were already planned to end the season and announced that he will take a break from competitions to prepare for the winter cyclocross.

The decision removed the races from the Franco-Belge Circuit, which would take place next Thursday (28), and Paris-Tours, at the beginning of October. So that the competitions would not go unnoticed, Jasper Philipsen was selected by Alpecin-Deceuninck to replace the cyclist.

“Sunday, Mathieu van der Poel ended a long and successful summer season. He is now enjoying some time off before preparing for the upcoming cyclocross season. Circuit Franco-Belge, Mathieu, will be replaced by Jasper Philipsen,” said the statement published on social media by the team.

Previously, the athlete had informed the website Het Nieuwsblad that he would be interested in remaining in competitions but felt that he was not in his best shape. Furthermore, he stated that one of his goals was to stay on the Paris-Tours circuit, but that, if he didn’t improve, he would run the risk of leaving the matches.

“I already know that I can’t reach my best shape right now. I think Paris-Tours is one of the most enjoyable races of the season. That’s why I wanted to run. But if the form doesn’t improve, I don’t know. Just walking around doesn’t make sense. Maybe it would be better to rest and prepare for the cyclocross season. A long period without racing would do me good”, said Mathieu van der Poel.
