Last Friday (18), through a statement on social and official networks, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced the suspension of Toon Aerts for two years. The measure was adopted because the test samples of the drug letrozole were found in the anti-doping test.

According to published reports, the substance was found from the examination carried out before the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, last year, in Fayetteville, United States, in which it secured the sixth position in the competition. However, the cyclist claims that he had the positive result from a contamination of a food supplement.

“The Court found Toon Aerts guilty of an anti-doping rule violation (presence of letrozole metabolite in a sample collected out of competition on 19 January 2022) and imposed a period of two years of ineligibility, effective 16 February 2022, the date on which it accepted the provisional suspension,” the UCI statement said.
The association continued: “After a thorough examination of the case, including several expert reports submitted by the Belgian rider, the Court found that Toon Aerts had failed to establish how the prohibited substance entered his body and imposed the standard sanction under the UCI Anti-Doping Rules. (ADR) and the World Anti-Doping Code for the presence of letrozole”.
After the announcement, the cyclist denied any doping policy and has one month to modify the decision applied by the UCI, through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The use of the reported substance is prohibited by the Association and is usually found in people who ingest anabolic steroids and may have the objective of increasing testosterone production.
