In the first final of an Australian Open without the presence of the Big-3 – Rafael Nadal, Novak DJokovic and Roger Federer, since 2005, the public watched one of the best matches in the history of the competition.

With that, the Italian Jannik Sinner, 22 years old and fourth in the ranking, defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev, 27 and 3rd, by 3 to 2, partials of 3/6, 3/6, 6/4, 6/4 and 6 /3, in a game lasting almost four hours.

The Russian, currently number 3 in the world rankings, was looking for his second Grand Slam title in his career, but had in his memory the defeat in the final of the 2022 Australian Open, when he won the first two sets against Rafael Nadal, but took the upset.

Sinner played his first Major match, his best result so far having been the semi-final at Wimbledon 2023.

It’s good to remember that Sinner was coming off a great campaign in the tournament. He didn’t lose a single set in his first five matches and, in the semi-final, he eliminated the greatest champion in the tournament’s history, Serbian Novak Djokovic, 3-1.

Medvedev had a much longer path, with just a 3-0 victory, and two 3-2 defeats in the quarterfinals, against the Polish Hubert Hurkacz, and in the semi, with Alexander Zverev.
