Arsenal beat Porto on penalties and advance to the Champions League quarter-finals after 14 years

After 14 years, Arsenal are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League again. This Tuesday (12), the Gunners beat Porto 1-0 in normal time and beat the Portuguese 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

Called up to the national team, full-back Wendell and striker Galeno missed the Portuguese team’s kicks. Goalkeeper Raya shone and was decisive for England’s classification.

With that, behind the aggregate score, Arsenal started the decision at the Emirates with maximum speed. Arteta’s team pressed high, but couldn’t get any chances. Little by little, Porto entered the match and gained confidence.

++ Mbappé, Griezmann and Giroud will compete in the Paris Olympics, says newspaper

Evanilson had a good chance to score in the 22nd minute, but Raya made a great save. In the final stretch of the first stage, Odegaard got rid of the strong marking and found Trossard free to open the scoring in London.

It’s worth remembering that the last time Arsenal advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League it was precisely by eliminating Porto. In the 2009/2010 season, the Gunners lost 2-1 at Estádio do Dragão and beat the Portuguese 5-0 in the return match. This Tuesday, the north London team repeated the feat.

Criticized for arriving at Arsenal and blocking English goalkeeper Ramsdale, Spaniard David Raya saved Arsenal this Tuesday. In addition to making great saves during the game, the goalkeeper saved two penalties in the penalty shootout and put the Gunners back in the Champions League quarter-finals after 14 years.
