Sabonis sets record for most consecutive double-doubles in the modern NBA era

The triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers, 108 to 96, was historic for Domantas Sabonis. The Sacramento Kings forward reached his 54th consecutive double-double, a record in the modern NBA – since the merger with the ABA (American Basketball Association) in 1976. The Lithuanian-American recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists on Monday night (25).

“It’s an honor to be in the NBA record books, the best league in the world. Incredible feeling, but at the same time, I’m happy that it’s over.

In the last few weeks, everyone has been talking about it, and I’ve just tried to play my game and help the team win,” said Sabonis, who has 67 double-doubles this season (the highest mark in Kings history).

As a result, until the duel with the 76ers, the power forward’s run (53 games) was equal to that set by Kevin Love in 2011.

The all-time record – including the period before the merger between the NBA and ABA – belongs to Wilt Chamberlain. The historic athlete recorded double-doubles in 227 consecutive matches.

With his performance on Monday, Sabonis also reached his 25th triple-double. Only Nikola Jokic, Russell Westbrook, Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson had achieved the feat in one season.

“Omantas is having a phenomenal year. Congratulations to him. Obviously, he should have been an All-Star. He should have been in the MVP discussion,” Kings coach Mike Brown said.

Under Sabonis’ command, the Sacramento franchise occupied sixth place in the NBA’s Western Conference, with 42 wins and 29 losses.

The team’s next two games will be against the Dallas Mavericks, who have the same campaign and are in seventh place. The teams will face each other this Tuesday (26) and Friday (29).
