Due to strict laws in Qatar, the host country of the 2022 World Cup, the captains of the teams from England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Holland and Switzerland decided not to wear the armband that highlights support for LGBTQIA+ causes and which is against prejudice.

The teams that had chosen to use the banner were notified by FIFA that the action could bring fines, punishments and sporting sanctions for the team. Upon learning of the warnings, the European federations said that “we are very frustrated with FIFA’s decision, which we believe is unprecedented. We wrote to FIFA in September stating our desire to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football and have not heard back. Our players and coaches are disappointed.”
In addition to the statements made that countered FIFA’s criticism of the use of the armband, the teams also reported that there is nothing in the Federation’s statutes or in the World Cup regulations that mention warnings for violations of uniforms.
