Champions League have the first round of the quarterfinals with the most goals in 13 years

It wasn’t just any Champions League week. In this 2023/24 edition, the Champions League recorded the highest number of goals in the first games of the quarter-finals in more than 10 years. There were 18, in the four matches on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As a result, the last time the competition had so many goals in the first games of this stage was in 2010/11. And only on one occasion in the history of the Champions League (including the pre-Champions era) has there been a quarter-final start with more goals, in the 1956/57 season: 19.

Of the 18 goals scored in recent days, six had direct participation from Brazilian players. Vinicius Junior provided the assists for Rodrygo and Valverde, in the game between Real and City. The same did Gabriel Jesus, for Trossard in the clash between Arsenal and Bayern.

Samuel Lino scored in Atléticos victory over Dortmund, and Raphinha found the net twice in Barça ‘s victory over PSG.
