The Premier League will have a game on Christmas Eve for the first time since 1995. Thus, the league announced this Thursday (26) that the game between Wolverhampton and Chelsea, valid for the 18th round, will take place on December 24th.

However, the measure did not end up going down well and generated controversy with fans.
“It is completely unacceptable for Wolverhampton v Chelsea to be scheduled for Christmas Eve. This could lead to problems both with staff at the Molineux stadium and with transport. We will ask the Premier League to review this decision”, the Chelsea Supporters’ Union said in a statement.
As a result, fans of Chelsea, a London club, will have to travel around 3h30 by car, or two hours by train, to get to the Molineux stadium. This was on Christmas Eve, in the middle of winter.

Namely, until this clash, the only game in the history of the Premier League to be held on December 24th was between Leeds and Manchester United, in 1995. That is, 28 years ago.
It is good to remember that it is part of English football culture to have several games on December 26th, the so-called “Boxing Day”. This time in 2023 there will be five, with the highlight being Manchester United x Aston Villa, at Old Trafford.
The English Championship will have at least one game per day between December 21st and January 2nd, except on December 29th.
