This year’s World Cup in Qatar will feature a Dutch, Rwandan and Japanese team who will referee the first games. They will also have the assistance of three women, a Brazilian Neuza Back, a Mexican Karen Díaz Medina and an American Kathryn Nesbitt who will help oversee the most important games in the world.

The three referees have similar backgrounds. Stéphanie Frappart has been on an important path in Europe, as in her career she was the first woman to referee matches in the French Championship, European Supercup, Champions League, French Second Division and in the French Cup final.
Yoshimi Yamashita led the Asian Champions League match in 2019, and Salima Mukansanga the Africa Nations Cup match in early 2022, and the Women’s National Football Championship in Rwanda.
For a country that has great gender inequality like Qatar, having three women referee the biggest football championship in the world is an extremely important step.
