Etoile de Bességes: Second day of competition has widespread accident

The second day of racing at the Etoile de Bességes in France got off to a bad start. Last Thursday (02), several cyclists suffered a mass accident when passing on the path about 20 kilometers away, near Aubais, leaving even the athlete Valentin Ferron hanging outside the bridge where the pileup occurred. Two athletes suffered head trauma.

To contain the accident, the organization decided to paralyze the stage and call all the rescuers that were on site to support the cyclists. In an interview with L’Equipe TV, race director Claudine Fangille explained what happened: “Three ambulances had to leave the race and so we couldn’t guarantee safety if something happened in the following kilometres. The best decision was to neutralize”.

Sébastien Grinard of Lotto-Dsnty was taken to hospital to be checked for a possible fracture, as were Dylan Teuns and Guillaume Boivin of Israel-Premier Tech, who both suffered stab wounds and bruises on their left hand and back.
