Shingo Kunieda ends his tennis journey with a golden key

The athlete was number one in Paralympic sport several times

Paralympic athlete Shingo Kunieda revealed during a press conference this week that he will retire from tennis. The Japanese said that he was very satisfied with his trajectory and that he was very excited for the public to see the sport on wheels.

“After the Tokyo Games it really felt like it was now being seen as a sport. I’ve always tried to get people to think of it as a sport and last year I didn’t feel the pressure to do that anymore. Finally I could just play tennis and compete against my opponent”, said the player.

In his career, Shingo Kunieda won 50 Grand Slam titles, four gold medals in Paralympic sport and a third singles title at the Tokyo Games. In addition, the athlete became one of the biggest names in tennis, obtaining the number one position in the year-end ranking of the International Tennis Federation.
