UAE Tour: Adam Yates beats Jebel Hafeet climbing record with knockout solo win

Briton Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) won the final stage of the UAE Tour, a 153km link between Abu Dhabi and Jebel Hafeet, after leading a great attack 3km from the finish line. Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) was second at 10s and Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroen Team) third at 42s.

The last leg of the UAE Tour started with several attacking attempts with Jaakko Hanninen (AG2R Citroen Team), Maurice Ballerstedt (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Ignatas Konovalovas (Groupama-FDJ), Michel Hessmann (Jumbo – Visma) and Sam Welsford (Team DSM ) to form the breakout of the day. The lead group got a 2:40 advantage over the peloton. With 107km to go, the breakaway advantage of the day increased to 6:00 over the peloton led by Soudal Quick-Step.

The new leader attacked for the first time six kilometers into the desert climb, along with Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ). He then accelerated and left the two behind and no one caught up with him. He finally won the stage.
