IndyCar: 2023 season starts with serious accident

The confusion on the first day of this year's new season

Last Sunday (05), in St. Petersburg, during the return of the 2023 season of the IndyCar championship, Devlin DeFrancesco’s car suffered an accident after being hit by Benjamin Pedersen from behind the peloton. The vehicle was hit so hard that it spun in the air.

The crash was so dangerous that drivers Simon Pagenaud, Santino Ferrucci and Hélio Castroneves were also involved in the accident. However, according to the NBC broadcast, no one involved was “seriously injured”. After the confusion, five more drivers were officially declared out of the Saint Petersburg Grand Prix.

When asked about the crash, Devlin DeFrancesco said he was scared of the mess: “I’m fine, but it was a really hard blow and not the way you would want to start the season. I saw Helio turning in front of me and I slammed on the brakes, but there was nowhere to go. I just prepared myself for it. It was a wild ride”.
