Early rest: Marianne Vos undergoes surgery and is absent from upcoming competitions

The athlete was in a lot of pain in the region

“Last week I went to operate on the left iliac artery. After a few days in the hospital, I’m back home to begin a careful 10-week program of recovery and rehabilitation. My biggest hope for now is to be able to return to competition without symptoms. I would love to continue riding and racing at the highest level and I will certainly do my best to come back”, said the athlete.

The same situation occurred in 2020, when Marianne Vos was participating in the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Cyclocross World Championship in the Netherlands, and due to a lot of pain in her leg, she had to withdraw from the competition. Weeks later, the athlete had to undergo surgery to feel better.

Later this month, the cyclist managed to win the last round of the UCI Gravel World Series, which took place in Sweden, at the Gravel Grit n’ Grind stage in Halmstad. The competition is part of the UCI calendar and is one of the big events that precede the Gravel World Championships, which are held in October.

In the professional environment, complications with the iliac artery are common in athletes in the area and in runners. In recent years, cyclists Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, Amanda Spratt, Tayler Wiles and Annemiek van Vleuten have carried out operations in the region.
