While Kuss struggled with the climbing, Vingegaard and Roglic battled for the win, and the Slovenian got it. They all struggled with the fog and the clouds, which limited visibility. Kuss finished third, and had his 29-second-lead cut to just eight.

With Kuss first and Vingegaard second, Roglic remains third in the overall standings with 1min08s. In fourth comes Juan Ayuso, 4 minutes behind. Leading since stage 8, Kuss said that he was surprised and happy at the end. “When I crossed the finish line I thought I’d lost my jersey. I wasn’t even sad because I did my best on the climb. When I found out I was still in the lead, I was surprised. It’s a lot of happiness”

Roglic talked about the difficulty of the Angliru. “Always so difficult and so steep. I made my own pace and the climb made the difference. I let Bahrain Victorious go, they were going fast enough, and the moment I felt the pace slowing a bit, I went for it.”.

The 18th stage is this Thursday (14), with 179km between Pola Allande and La Cruz de Linares.
