The Belgian is the 2022 winner of the competition, and won by almost five minutes, launching a solo attack from a breakaway group. Even with the win, he is out of contention since stage 1, and is 13th overall.

Evenepoel is almost 28 minutes off leader Sepp Kuss, who is very close to win his first Grand Tour. Kuss increased his lead from eight to 17 seconds over second-placed Jonas Vingegaard, with three stages remaining. In third comes Primoz Roglic, their Jumbo-Visma team-mate.
The Dutch team set out to become the first to win all three Grand Tours in the same year. Roglic won the Giro d’Italia in May and Vingegaard won Tour de France in July. The 19th stage is this Friday (15), with 177.5km between La Bañeza and Íscar.
