Last Friday (8), Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko apologized for the remark he made about Sergio Perez, when he blamed the driver inconsistent on his ethnicity.

In a statement to ServusTV Sport and Talkt he said that “I want to make it absolutely clear that I do not believe that we can generalize about the people from any country, any race, any ethnicity.”. Marko added that he was trying to make a point about Perez’s performance in the season, but that “it was wrong to attribute this to his cultural heritage”.

The comments were made last weekend on a Servus TV programme, after the Italian Grand Prix, when Marko compared Max Verstappen and Sergio. “We know that he has problems in qualifying, he has fluctuations in form, he is South American and he is just not as completely focused in his head as Max [Verstappen] is or as Sebastian [Vettel].”
He referred to Perez as South American, even though he is from Mexico, in North America. Formula 1 fans didn’t take kindly to the comments, and recalled on social media that several of the sport’s world champions were from South America, like Juan Manuel Fangio, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna.
