Alcaraz made his debut in the biggest tournament in South America in 2020, when he was ranked 406th in the rankings and was already recognized as one of tennis’ future promises, receiving an invitation. In 2022, he won the title by beating tough opponents like Matteo Berrettini, Fabio Fognini and Diego Schwartzman. It was a remarkable year for the young athlete, who also became champion of a Grand Slam for the first time, by winning the US Open, thus reaching the top of the world rankings.
The following year, in 2023, Alcaraz reached the final of the Rio Open, but was defeated by Britain’s Cameron Norrie. Despite this, he had a successful season, winning six tournaments on three different surfaces. At just 20 years old, Alcaraz also reached another Grand Slam final and defeated Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. “Alcaraz is part of our history, as are several other names that emerged on the circuit after good campaigns at the Rio Open. We had the privilege of witnessing his debut in an ATP and, in the following edition, his victory in the first ATP 500. We are following the rise of one of the possible best players of all time, and it is a huge satisfaction that Rio is part of this success story. Carlitos is one of the biggest names in world tennis, and in Rio, he will certainly count on the support of the fans who , in a short time, created a special connection with him,” said Luiz Carvalho, director of Rio Open.
