Carlos Alcaraz’s time at the 2024 Rio Open lasted 18 minutes. In the first game of his debut against Thiago Monteiro, the Spaniard, number 2 in the world, sprained his foot.

As a result, he received medical attention, returned to the court, but was unable to continue in the match. Thus, Monteiro advanced and will have another Brazilian ahead of him in the round of 16: Felipe Meligeni.
Alcaraz’s injury happened when the score was 15-15 in the first game. The Spaniard fell and didn’t get up immediately. The scene has already sparked concern. Even Thiago Monteiro crossed the court to check the situation and talk to his opponent.
“I told him how much I admire him, that I was sad about the situation. I thought about offering some support. We know how sad it is to leave the game with body pain. I hope he received my words willingly and that he recovers quickly,” said the Brazilian.

With the attention focused on him, the world number 2 received medical attention on the side of the court. He iced it and got back into the game. He still broke Monteiro’s serve and didn’t appear to have so many mobility problems.
In the next game, however, Alcaraz became more uncomfortable, and the Brazilian returned the break. The Spaniard then withdrew from the match.
Classified for the round of 16, Monteiro will face Felipe Meligeni, in a 100% Brazilian clash. The two are friends, but the partnership will be put aside, at least for now.
