Tracy Walker and DeShon Elliott have been at the top of the safety room for the Detroit Lions from the start of training camp. And that’s no surprise, with third-round rookie Kerby Joseph still relatively new to safety andother defensive backs swapping positions.
However, Joseph got his chance to flash his ability in the team’s preseason-opening loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The rookie was tied for the team lead with 43 defensive snaps. He was also among the leaders with 12 reps on special teams. Safety JuJu Hughes matched Joseph’s 43 defensive plays. C.J. Moore continues to work his way back from an injury. Ifeatu Melifonwu didn’t play in the first exhibition game. And Brady Breeze was injured on the opening kickoff and did not return.
Elliott looked the part on Friday night against the Falcons in his limited reps. He had three tackles on only 13 plays while flying around. Elliott wasn’t far from the ball when out there, which is a positive sign for the oft-injured safety. Walker added two tackles on his 13 reps. Hughes had two tackles while playing next to Joseph for most of the game.
