The American, who is World No. 3, won the three-set marathon 7/5, 5/7, 7/6 (7/2), on the Diamond Center Court in Beijing. She came into the second-round clash with a 1-0 lead over the Croatian, who is World No. 48, in their head-to-head.

The match was marked by breaks throughout the third set and a lot of errors, 50 from Martic and 43 from Gauff. She aced the Croatian in her service game at 5/5 and ensured a tiebreak by holding serve again, but ended up not needing it, since she secured the first break of the match.
Now Gauff will face either Russian Veronika Kudermetova, World No. 16 and champion of Tokyo, Japan, or Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, World No. 49. On Monday (2), Gauff overcame Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova 7/6 6/3, in her first match since winning the US Open last month (September).
