Ahead of this weekend’s (22) U.S. Grand Prix, Perez told the reporters that he has been “laughing” at those rumors suggesting he would announce his retirement at the next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix. “That really sums up my season: a guy says something about me and all of a sudden it becomes true. But I have a contract for next year and I have no reason to not fulfill that contract”.

Perez has a contract to Red Bull until the end of the 2024 season, but his teammate Max Verstappen’s dominance over him has sparked speculations about the team wanting to replace him earlier. He even admitted that the current gap in performance between him and Verstappen is unacceptable.
“Definitely, we cannot have this sort of gap. I think, basically, to go back to the first six races or so and we were fighting with Max. That’s the target, to get back to that level of comfort with the car”.
Perez also refused to confirm his openness to another team, claiming he is “just enjoying it at the moment”. “I’m loving the challenge of getting back out of it. I’m 33, I think I’ve got some good years ahead of me, so I think as an athlete you want to maximize your career. That to me is important, and that’s my focus. I’m with Red Bull and I want to stay with Red Bull, but obviously it has to work out for both sides.”
