Operation Ilex: Spanish police investigate athletes involved in trafficking banned substances

The investigation has been ongoing since January last year and so far several sportsmen have been the target of the investigation

In recent weeks, Spanish police from the Guardia Civil have been investigating several athletes and cycling professionals involved and suspected in cases of trafficking prohibited substances to athletes. In all, so far, there are eight people involved, but the judge responsible for the case has not released the names.

During the investigations, the authorities stated that the scheme was led by the doctor Marcos Maynar, who was already involved in cases of doping in the Portuguese team LA-MSS, Vicente Belda, a former professional and former director of the Kelme team, and his son Vicente Belda Garcia, a former cyclist suspended in 2017, is involved in the investigations.

All the athletes’ assessments, such as analyzes and stress tests, were carried out at the Faculty of Sports Sciences in Extremadura, where the doctor was a professor. The investigation also investigates former cyclists Miguel Ángel López and Gipuzkoa Ángel Vázquez Iglesias.
