The English coach terminated his contract on Saturday (7), after the team’s 2-0 victory over New York City FC. However, even with the victory, DC United no longer has a chance of advancing to the MLS playoffs.

“This decision paves the way for our next generation of coaches to have the full opportunity to add a new philosophy and structure to our operations. We spoke with Wayne and agreed that it was best to go our separate ways now,” said club CEO Jason Levien .

Wayne Rooney was hired as coach of DC United in July last year. He was coming off a two-year job at Derby County in England.

“It’s the right time. I believe I’ve done everything possible to take the team to the playoffs. It’s about timing my career. I feel it’s the right time to return to England. What lies ahead, I don’t know,” declared Rooney, according to the “Washington Post”.

Under Rooney, DC United have recorded 11 wins in 36 games in 2023 (as well as 10 draws and 15 defeats).

Now, according to information from the English media, Rooney is expected to be the main candidate to replace coach John Eustace, who was fired from Birmingham City in England’s second division and is in sixth place in the Championship.
