Game between Belgium and Sweden is interrupted after two fans are shot dead near the stadium

The match between Belgium and Sweden, in Brussels, for the European Championship qualifiers, was interrupted at half-time, due to the death of two fans, six miles from the stadium.

According to information from the European press, the players from both teams chose not to return to the field for the second half after learning about the incident. The score was 1-1 at the time the game was suspended.

Thus, local authorities confirmed that it was a terrorist attack. Belgium and Sweden were tied 1-1 at the time the match was stopped. Fans present at the stadium were advised to remain inside the facilities for safety reasons.

A man, identified as Abdesalem Al Guiliani, opened fire on civilians, killing at least one person; two of them would be Swedish fans, and would be heading towards the stadium where the game was being held.

In a video, the person responsible for the attack claimed to be affiliated with the terrorist group ISIS, Islamic State. He has not yet been captured by the police and remains at large.

“Following a possible terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with both teams and local police authorities, that the Euro 2024 Qualifiers game between Belgium and Sweden has been suspended. Further information will be provided in due course,” declared UEFA, in an official note.

According to information from the news agency “Reuters”, Belgium has increased its alert against terrorism to the maximum level. Belgium has already qualified for the European Championship and was facing Sweden, which no longer has a chance of getting a place, in the eighth round of Group F of the Qualifiers.
