Pistons coach blasts referee for admitting mistake in controversial NBA game

“Absolutely the worst score of the season.” That’s how Monty Williams described the uncalled foul for the Detroit Pistons with eight seconds left in the game, giving the New York Knicks a 113-111 victory on Monday. The coach of the Michigan team blasted the refereeing and opened up a controversy in the NBA.

With that, the Pistons were winning by one point with about 20 seconds left in the game. After Jalen Brunson missed a three-pointer, the Knicks got the offensive rebound, but Ausur Thompson was able to intercept Donte DiVicenzo’s pass.

The Knicks player then fouled the ball back with eight seconds left in the game, passing the ball to the basket of Josh Hart, who was still fouled and converted the free throw to seal the victory for the hosts.

“We had a chance to win the game, and a guy dove at Ausur’s legs and there was no foul called. That’s an abomination. You can’t miss that in an NBA game. Period. And I’m tired of talking about it.” I’m tired of my guys asking, “What else can we do, coach?” This situation is Exhibit A of what we’ve been dealing with all season, and that’s enough,” Williams said after the game.

As a result, the match’s chief referee, James Williams, admitted the error in not calling the foul. The Knicks’ victory, however, cannot be disputed.

“After post-game analysis, we determined that Thompson gets to the ball first and is then deprived of the opportunity to gain possession of the ball. Therefore, a loose ball foul should have been called against Donte DiVincenzo,” the referee said.

With yet another defeat, the Pistons are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, in 15th place, with just eight wins in 57 games. The Knicks are in fourth place, with 35 wins in 58 games.
